The Foal and the Orlu
Once upon a time a young girl, named Bayar, lived at the Kataii tribe at the Eastern Plains. Bayar was a born free Kataii woman, her skin was quite dark, since her parents were both full blood Kataii. Her hair was bound in a single braid, and bound up at the back of her head. Her body slender but strong. Bayar was the sole daugther of her father, a Kataii outrider who was a famous kaiila breeder. The kaiila of Takhi, which was his name, were strong war animals, vicious in battle, dominant and always eager to fight against other kaiila. Specially the stallions were mean beasts. And so the young, beautiful dark skinned Kataii girl, grew up among the best of kaiila, she was as if a kaiila her self, agile, strong and snappy against all who came to near to her. All day she spend at the paddocks, the Kataii dislike stables because they were walled structures, feeding, grooming and riding her fathers animals. One of the kaiila was her favorite, a young male yearling, strong and gracious like a gazelle. Bayar always played with the foal, it was her deerest friend. She cared for it, combed it's manes and chased away the vicious kaiila flies which torment the mounts of the Wagon people so often, specially in summer. In the course of years both grew up, the girl Bayar grew to a pretty wild teenager and the foal became a strong lively colt, a young horse, and those were the days that Bayar jumped on his back and rode over the open grass fields around the Kataii harigga. She named her friend Muuno, which means vicious, because the colt was only friendly to her, and happened to bite and claw at other kaiila, and even people. The foal was however always nice to her, it seems he saw her as his family.
--------------------
Bayar means Joy
Batar means Hero
Muuno means Vicious
Takhi means Mongolian Horse
When growing older Muuno became more dangerous, and even experienced outriders avoided to approrach him. During occasions he was unmanageable and in those occasions the kaiila herders asked Bayar to calm Muuno, in a bad mood Muun was not approachable for sweet words, but Bayar simply stumped him at the snout, and then her friend rapidly became calm, as if awakened from his rage and realized he went to
far that his friend had to correct him. The colt however became more and more unruly and wild, specially with mares in heat were nearby, it went berserk and started to fight with stronger stallions who had first right of breeding. One evening Takhi called his daugther in his wagon and when she entered she saw the seniors of the clan of kaiila breeders sitting in a circle at the dais. Takhi said "your friend Muuno can no longer stay here, it disturbs the camp and the other kaiilas. Since its a master kaiila, we have decided that it should no longer serve us, but will be freed to live on the plains and improve the race of the wild animals living there.Bayar was first in shock, she had very mixed feelings, one side of her realized she would loose her friend, the other was happy for the kaiila, because a dominant male should not be in service. Afterall the best war mounts were the friends of the outriders, not their minions. She nodded to her father and simple said "thank you for releasing my friend". The next day Takhi and Bayar, who rode Muuno, went to the grassy fields east of the valley of Omens where several wild herds grazed. Bayar dismounted Muuno, removed the light saddle from its back and disconnected the bit and reins. She gave Muuno a last hug, then slapped his hind leg and off Muuno did go, straight to freedom. It jumped like a young foal again and it's whinnying shackled over the grass covered plains. Father and daugther kept watching the animal until it disappeared over the lofty hills.
Several years past, Bayar grew up to a strong young woman and was taken as a companion by a promising outrider Batar. There was great love between the couple and Bayar even tolerated the slaves he had, for they made her work lighter, and she knew that only she could give him what he most wanted: sons. She even instructed the kajirae to arouse her companion during her periods of fertility but ordered not to give him release until he slept with her. This strategy delivered her two sons in the first two years of years of companionship. Batar was very happy with her, not only for her him giving sons and love, but also for her cold calculated use of slaves for reaching her goals. He needed to have a firm companion at his side, because he had plans to make career in the Kataii army and wanted to become an Orlu, a leader of one hundred. Bayar knew of her companions desire and she herself was ambitious too, which she, as being a true Gorean woman canalized though her man.
She bought pretty slaves at the Turian market, not for her companion, but she send them to the men of power among the Kataii, the Orlu and Orali, the haruspices and instructed the slaves to offer themselves with the words "may this girl please you tonight as a present of the outrider Batar", feared for the whip the slaves did their utmost, and so Batars name became well known as a generous man in the ranks of the military. Since Batar was a formidable warrior and also excelled in the field,he was soon promoted to the rank of Orlu and led a fine troop of hundred well trained outriders.
Batar led several dangerous missions, and soon his face was covered with many fine scars, which were kissed at night by his companion, after he returned from visiting his kajirae. Batar's achievements as Orlu were signaled by the higher ranks and since the war with Turia deepened they commanded Batar to join the meeting of the war strategists. Batar entered the first wagon where the Orali were seated, headed by the Kataii Ubar. The first Oralus told him "we need men for an almost suicidal dangerous mission". Batar listened concentrated, hoping he would be chosen for this mission. "a small caravan with arrow wood is supplying the white city of Turia. we want you to destroy these wagons". Batar's eyes lighted up and eagerly said "Wise leaders, I will accomplish this mission". The first Oralus, a leader of a thousand man saw his greed for glory "be warned Batar, this is not an easy task, we suspect the caravan will be heavily guarded and it may well be a trap. But we are Kataii, and this is a chance for outriders to earn a scar or die". Batar looked more serious now, realizing the danger of his task. He returned to his wagon and told his companion Bayar of the mission. She looked worried "this is a turning point, you can get killed in the raid, but also put a giant leap forward in becoming a Oralus.Since you are warrior, you must accept the challenge, better die brave then live in the cold shadow, ashamed and beaten". Batar answered "no hair on my ugly scarred head was thinking of evading this doom ride, I am Kataii". "that's my man". Bayar said proudly "even if you get killed in battle, you will live forever through your sons, and in the stories the yearkeepers tell at the fire, you will be mentioned as a hero". After this said, Batar lead his beloved wife to the furs, and made love to her as if she was a slave till the morning sun warmed his wagon.
The Hunderd rode south to wards the road from Turia to the sea, to Kargash. First the land was relative dry for behind the Ta Thassa, later it became more grassy, after a day riding the troop cam at the sandy dry road between the white city Turia and the Tassa harbor Kargash. his is a sand road almost only a trail made by caravans, the Wagon people did not allow paved roads in the plains. They ambushed road workers or send stampedes of berserk bosks over the infrastructure, till all was trampled into dust and mud, including the road men them selves. Batar led his man to a kopje, a concentration of small hills and rocky monoliths and went into hiding. They did not made fire, for not to betray them selves, but ate of the dried bosk biltong and ate fruits growing at the trees and shrubs of the small hill. They waited 2 days, entertaining with tospit games and with gathering food. Batar had constantly to scouting parties in the field, at the end of day 2 the scouts returned "they will be here at the end of the afternoon tomorrow". The Kataii went tom sleep early and woke up well rested, they cared, fed and watered the kailla, then ate and drank them selves. Then they went into ambush. The caravan came an hour earlier then expected but the men were alert and were ready in time. Batar had divided his Hundred in 2 forces, the main force of 70 would attack the caravan when it hd almost passed the kopje, de second, smaller, would lay behind the caravan and catched every one who tried to flee, or would crush the caravan in the back. The teams worked together like the 2 horns of the bosks as which this tactic was mentioned.
When the caravan came at the place of ambush, the small group let the wagons pass, when the caravan reached the place where the mian force was hiding, Batar let the first 10 wagons pass, then attacked with full force, splitting te caravan in 2 and killing instantly all carters at the wagons and the Kataii, smelling a fast victory specially while the guards on tharlarions fled over the fields. One bold Kataii jumed at a wagon to see what they and earned, but stumbled back with a spear through his chest. Suddenly infantry came out of the wagons, Reds.., they fired arrows and launched javelins, several Kataii and kaiila fell. It became a wild turmoil of fighting, both sides had skilled warriors, Batar regrouped, strengthened by the reserves of the second horn, and attacked the warriors before they could make an infantry defense square, they killed many. Victory was near but then the tharlarion cavalry returned and attacked the kaiila riders, Batar decided to retreat for the kaiila were no match for the tharlarion. He saved all is men, even the dead were carried away, but Batar had not forgotten his mission "burn the arrow wood". He lit a ceramic bottle with tharlarion oil, and lit the oil soaked repcloth coming out of it. He turned his kaiila, to speed to the wagons, his mount swiftly, twisted and turned between the heavy tharlarions, the launched javelins, missing Batar each time at an inch. Then a fast tharlarion attacked his mount, the kaiila wanted to evade the attacking reptile but was too slow. The tharlarion claw took a big piece of flesh out of the hind leg of the kaiila, Batar felt his kailla went to stumble and he launched the bottle with burning oil into the nearest wagon, putting it aflame. He then turned his wounded beast and speeded back to his men, however the wounded kailla could no longer make hare like jumps and now the thrown javelins did hit. Batar was caught in his left should and his mount struck by two spears in it's belly and leg the kaiila fell, and Batar and rolled further, till he smashed against a rock loosing conscience.
The battle continued while the remaining outriders launched a storm of arrows to protect their fallen leader, he was saved by 2 men and after checking the damage, 6 wagons were aflame, they retreated. The hundred, now a few less, returned to the Kataii wagon camp, bringing the wounded Batar with them. Bayar saw them coming. Seeing her companion heavily wounded, the enrgetic free woman, eing of the wagons, she did not whine, glad he was still alive. She became active and let his carrier been brought to the healers tent and ordered the green to take care of him. After been sure her man was in good hands she listened how the outriders reported the raid to the Oralus, how they were almost trapped and how Batar had saved the day by putting the wagons on fire. Bayar heard how his kaiila was struck by a tharlarion claw and she though deeply. After the conference she asked permission to speak "I heard my man behaved bravely, I ask the war leaders to honor him the red scar for he almost gave his life against a formidable enemy". War leaders cheered and yelled, yes, yes, Batar earns that scar". Bayar continued "however my man is wounded, Kataii blood has flown, we need to revenge this". Again the outriders cheered, fired on by charismatic free woman. "Oooh wise leaders of
war, gave me permission to lay the base of Batar's revenge, I need 5 outriders to protect me on this mission". The warleaders were not eager to grant this request, but Bayar told them her plan, and was convincing enough to win their support. "Go then Kataii woman, bring honor ton your husband and our tribe, we will ask for 5 volunteers to accompany you.
The first Oralus went to the warriors camp and called a meeting. When many man gathered he started speaking "we all know that Batar is wounded, he did a brave battle but in the end he was slain. Luckily he survived. This little woman here, is his companion, she wants do a quest so that the next time, her man will have the upper hand. She needs 5 volunteers to accompany her. Getting the volunteers was no problem, Bayar was a popular leader and soon 5 men from his Hundred were at the side of the young woman. She started organizing the quest, several extra kaiila she took with her, and 2 slaves to care for the outriders. Bayar was a woman who though of every detail. The party took off, they roamed the Plains, Bayar had some idea where to search but the Plains are wide. She then saw what she was looking for, a trail of wild kaiila "there it is men, our trail, lets follow it till the end" And so the group followed the path of the wild herd. After a day, the riding kaiila's of the outriders became restless, soon the men saw why. Over a hill they saw a group of Turian men accompanied by 2 tharlarions. One of the tharlarions was mounted by a veiled free woman. The groups were about the same size and the outriders discussed if they would attack it. Bayar remembered them on their quest, a fight would endanger te mission. Being disciplined warriors the outriders realized that. They road past the Turians, which were alert to, but were not keen on a battle either. Only the free woman started yelling insults "see that unveiled slut, her face is dark from the sun". "be silent Lady Porcia" warned one of the Reds "these are dangerous people". Bayar looked at the free woman and said "one day you will be veiled with the fabrics of the dung sack of the noble Kataii tribe". The Kataii men laughed at the though of that, but the Turian high caste paled behind her veil, hearing the ice in the voice of the Kataii woman. The 2 groups parted.
The group traveled further, following the trail of the wild herd, day after day the tracks was clearer, they were gaining at the bunch of kaiila. Soon the tracks were so clear that the most experienced outrider said the kaiila are over the next hill, probably at the water of a shallow river. They went over the hill, and saw the outrider was right, a group of about thirty kaiila were drinking, protected by a giant vicious looking stallion. The stallion stood apart from it's mares and colts. It had grown gigantic, but Bayar still recognized her foal friend in it. One of the outriders gasped "such monster kaiila can even tear a tharlarion apart". "Exactly, I see you realize the goal of our quest" Worried the outriders looked at her "you want us to catch this demon from hell?". "Thats my task" the free woman said "you are only here to protect me against human predators". Bayar dismounted and slowly walked towards the mean looking stallion. During the walk she made the same soothing sounds as she made in her youth. Moonu, the kaiila recognized her, as being his friend, he allowed her to approach him, and groom and comb it's manes. The outriders watched with open mouth for they had expected she would have been torn apart. She saddled the kaiila with a mere blanket and some simple reins, then mounted it, and rode to her guards. "Lady Bayar, if I had not seen this with my own eyes, i would not have believed this" one of the men said "don't forget he is my friend, I shares grass and also earth with him"
The group of Bayar and the 5 outriders returned home to the Kataii camp, they did not meet any obstacles, and Moonu, the kaiila, got more and more used to the reins of Bayar, and her weight on it's back. Batyar knew however that still have the mission was only half accomplished, Moonu was still wild and vicious. On arrival in the harigga, Bayar went the the healers tent, she saw her companion doing exercises. Being a free woman, she did not jumped on him , what a slut would do, but greeted him respectful. He greeted her back, the glistering in hs eyes show how fond he was of he'. "oooh my man, carrier of many scars, I have brought you a present, a friend". Batar looked up, surprised. "follow me please outside". She showed him Moonu "husband this is Moonu, he is my friend. And he will become yours" She then turned to the mount "Moonu, this is my man, Batar, he will be your friend, and he needs you in battle". She brought the kaiila to Batar, the animal sniffed the wounded outrider, the clever beast did understand that Batar was special for Bayar, He pressed his snout against the shoulder of the Orlu, who grimaces, since he was not healed fully. In the next weeks Bayar, Batar and Moonu trained a lot. The woman cared for both and Batar trained the kaiila in battle movements, the animal learned quickly. this is the best stallion I have seen, how can i ever repay you for this"The woman looked abent minded, then said "I know a task. On our quest, a Lady Porcia insulted me. She rode a tharlarion. You can repay your debt to me, by beating the tharlarion, and so revenge your wound, and bring back the free woman Porcia, in chains, collared as a lowly slut. Then our victory over the citizens will be complete.
At last Moonu was ready for battle, his training was complete. Batar went out riding with 2 of his outriders, and they searched the vicinity of Turia, hoping to find some worthy opponents to test the fight capacities of Moonu. In the neighborhood of Turia, they sawa dust bowl, a small one, "that must be kaiila"one of his men said "maybe a good prey"So said the men raced to the signals of dust bowling up from paws on the steppe. Coming nearer, they saw 4 kaiila riders and 1 free woman at a high tharlarion. The 3 man of Batar approached the 5, weapons ready. The Turians saw they were in the majority, and despite their task of defending the free woman they attacked Batar and his men, only to see that 3 of their kaiila were speared on the lances of the outriders, and the riders finished of by quick thrown quiva. The fourth attacking mount was also killed by a quiva of Batar, at which the warrior, jumped at the high tharlarion and tried to escape with the precious free woman. Moonu and Batar followed the tharlarion, at which the warrior turned the big animal to meet and crush the storming kaiila. Moonu was however not a normal kaiila, but a vicious mean beast. He was much more agile then the reptile and took advantage of that, Batar had difficultiy to stay in the saddle when Moonu attacked the tharlarion instead of evading it. It jumped like berserk around the high ridden beast, and with each turn, it slashed at the belly of the animal, wounding it, making it bleed so it weakened quickly. The free woman screamed in terror when the kaiila snapped its terrible fangs in the throat of the now hardly moving tharlarion. The thararion stumbled, and with a last tear of it's head Moonu ripped of the skin of the throat and the red blood bursted out, killing the terrible opponent instantly. Both rider and free woman fell in the grass of the plains, the man being stabbed to death by the lance of Batar who there after laid the screaming free woman belly wise over his saddle, binding her and gagging her wild cries of fear with one of her own braids.
In triumph the men return to the Kataii camp. Bayar already waited for them, including the Hunderd of Batar and the Orali of the Kataii Batar cut loose the free woman Lady Porcia which fell fr the feet of Bayar "as promised" he said. Bayar took a quiva and stripped the free woman till she was bare naked and all men could admire her curves, The Kataii woman however threw her a filthy camisk, full of bosk dung spots "dress yourself slut, so the men are not distracted". After this, she snapped a collar around the neck of the fresh kajira and gave the key to her husband. The slave girl sobbed but was cuffed by Batar "be glad slut, that she does not throw you immediate in the dung sack". The former Lady Porcia instantly was silent. Bayar grinned "after i am finished with her, she will beg for the dung sack" She looked again at the Lady "Porcia is no slave name, you will be named Porky , till you have lost enough fat that you look more slender and pleasing". The men laughed at the Kataii woman's words, she continued "because you are a bit fat, I will give you some exercise" The fresh slave looked curious at the free woman who turned t the outriders "men, you all hundred, served my companion well, it's for you guys the task to initiate this slave in her new existence. use her well, and when you are finished, throw her in the dung sack, Porky screamed "noooo, please not, please not" but in vain, the men took her at their shoulders and brought her cheering of joy to the kaiila stables to introduce her into serving outriders. The revenge on the citizens is complete, their woman humiliated and used by the Kataii.
